Breaking News: Agbedeyi Desmond Condems Governor Okpebholo for abolishing traditional councils in Edo South Senatorial District
Agbedeyi O. Desmond, a principal lecturer at Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku and an activist, has condemned the Edo State governor Okpebholo for abolishing traditional councils established by former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Recall that in November 2024, Governor Okpebholo immediately after assuming office as Governor of Edo State abolished traditional councils instituted by the former Governor Obaseki.
Agbedeyi argues that this move infringes on the fundamental human rights of the Ijaws and other minority ethnic groups in Edo South senatorial district.
He believes the governor's action may lead to crisis in the district, as these groups feel marginalized and deprived of their right to have recognized traditional rulers.
Agbedeyi urges the non-Benin tribes in the district to challenge this decision in court and come together to protest against the perceived dictatorship of Governor Okpebholo.
He also calls for a peaceful protest and potential boycott of future elections if the governor fails to reverse this policy.
He concluded by highlighting the need for inclusive governance and respect for the rights and traditions of all ethnic groups in Edo State.
Agbedeyi Desmond writes from Asaba, Delta State.
