BREAKING NEWS: MSC ELSA 3 TAKES A SUDDEN DIP OFF KOCHI — CREW RESCUED, NO OIL TEARS SPILLED!

Seigha Dora Ayedi Reports from Italy for Egbema Egberi Media International

In an unexpected twist straight out of an action movie (minus the explosions), the Liberian-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3 decided to lean a little too far into the weekend and took a 26-degree starboard tilt before gracefully bowing out of service off the coast of Kochi at approximately 0750 hours on 25 May.

The vessel, on a routine trip from Vizhinjam to Kochi, was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo and 12 with calcium carbide—not exactly your average grocery run. Add to that a fuel mix of 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of furnace oil, and you’ve got yourself a floating chemistry lab with a travel plan.

Thankfully, the real heroes stepped in: 21 crew members were swiftly rescued by the India Coast Guard (@IndiaCoastGuard), while INS Sujata scooped up the remaining 3, proving that the only thing faster than sinking ships is Indian maritime rescue.

As of now, no oil spill has been reported (and the fishes are breathing a sigh of relief). The Indian Coast Guard has deployed aircraft equipped with advanced oil spill mapping tech, keeping an eagle eye on the waters, ready to pounce at the first sign of an oily frown.

So far, it's a close call with a happy ending—no casualties, no environmental disaster, just a ship that tried to moonwalk sideways and failed. Stay tuned for further updates, and a round of applause for our coast guard folks who continue to prove that not all heroes wear capes—some sail and some fly.
