🌊 A King Among His People
In the heart of Nigeria’s Niger Delta—where creeks wind through ancient mangrove forests and the Ijaw spirit flows in song and struggle—the Egbema Kingdom is home to one of the oldest and most resilient Ijaw monarchies. And in recent memory, few names shine as brightly, though briefly, as His Royal Majesty Meshack Eseighotiegha Ubabiri (JP), Bini Pere IV, the Agadagba of Egbema.
His reign may have lasted less than two years, but his legacy ripples through the region like a tide that refused to recede.
👑 Ascension of a Visionary Monarch
After the passing of HRM G.O.E. Tiemo (Bini Pere III) in June 2020, the Egbema throne stood empty for over two years. Tensions simmered, factions debated, and the people waited.
Then came November 11, 2022—a day of cultural rebirth. In the kingdom's traditional capital of Ajakurama, Ambassador Meshack Ubabiri was declared the Agadagba-elect by the regency and traditional councils. Less than two weeks later, on November 23, 2022, the sacred installation rites were performed, officially crowning him as Bini Pere IV.
“We are one people, with one heritage, and one future.” – HRM Meshack E. Ubabiri
✊ A Reign of Reconciliation and Promise
From day one, HRM Ubabiri cast himself not merely as a ruler—but as a reconciler, visionary, and servant-leader.
He championed:
Unity across state lines (Egbema lies in both Edo and Delta States)
Revival of cultural identity
Youth empowerment and inclusion
Dialogue over division
Though traditional leadership can be mired in politics, HRM Ubabiri steered a diplomatic course. He reached out to opposing voices, aiming to rebuild trust in both the palace and the people.
⚖️ A Throne Tested by Controversy
Like all great kings, HRM Ubabiri faced his trials. A rival faction within the Egbema Traditional Council disputed his ascension, promoting Barrister Napoleon Egin and calling for a reversal of Ubabiri’s staff of office.
Petitions flew. Meetings grew tense.
But the Agadagba stood firm—calm in the storm, resolute in his calling.
“Let us not forget that we owe allegiance to our ancestors and the will of our people,” he told his chiefs.
💔 The Passing of a Monarch
On August 14, 2024, grief swept through the creeks and communities of Egbema. HRM Meshack Ubabiri passed away in Ajakurama, after a brief illness. His death stunned the region.
Delta State’s Deputy Governor, Kingsley Otuaro, paid tribute:
“He was a pillar of peace and a voice of unity.”
The mourning was deep. The sense of loss—immeasurable.
🌟 Legacy That Lives Beyond Time
Though his reign was brief, HRM Ubabiri’s impact was profound. He reminded the people of who they are, and what they could become.
He is remembered not only for his diplomacy and wisdom but also for:
Bridging generational gaps
Respecting sacred Ijaw traditions
Championing a new vision for a united Egbema Kingdom
“Ubabiri was not just a king. He was the soul of a people rediscovering their strength.” – Elder from Opuama Community
📌 Final Thoughts
In a time when Nigeria’s traditional institutions are redefining themselves, Bini Pere IV’s legacy stands as a model of peaceful leadership, community reconciliation, and cultural revival. The creeks may be quiet today, but the voice of Ubabiri still echoes—in stories, in songs, and in the hearts of the people.
🕯️ May the Agadagba rest among the ancestors in eternal peace.
