The Roaster, The Blessing, and The Burden of Dishonesty
The Rooster, the Blessing, and the Burden of Dishonesty
In the peaceful riverside community of Ofunama, nestled within the great Egbema Kingdom, an old man approached me one morning with a humble request. Holding a rooster — perhaps his only means of earning something for the day — he said to me:
"My son, please help me sell this rooster. If you can get N2,500 for it, I will be very grateful."
I accepted the task and went to the local market. There, I sold the rooster for N5,000. But when I returned, I lied. I told the old man that the rooster had sold for N2,000 — even N500 less than his expectation.
Without hesitation, he accepted the money and reached into it to hand me N500, saying, "Thank you, my son." Then, he began to pray.
"Everything you have done for me today, God will repay you a hundredfold. Even your children and grandchildren will reap the fruits of your wonderful deeds. In all your life, you will meet people who will help you just as you have helped me today. May you never lack helpers. May heaven remember you for good. Only God can reward you."
As he poured out blessings, my conscience roared like the Ofunama tide during flood season. This was no longer just a simple lie — this was a spiritual trap. I had taken what wasn’t mine, and now a pure-hearted old man was invoking heaven’s reward on me... for a deed I had not truly done.
When the old man finished praying, I couldn’t hold it in. I returned the N500 he gave me… along with the N2,500 I had stolen. I confessed everything.
The old man looked at me — surprised — then smiled, not in anger, but in grace. "My son," he said, "you have just saved your destiny."
🪶 Lessons from a Rooster
That day in Ofunama, I learned a life-altering lesson: honesty is not just a virtue — it's spiritual protection. For N2,500, I almost sold my integrity. For N2,500, I almost called a curse upon myself and my unborn children.
So many people today dismiss “little lies,” “small cheats,” or “minor fraud.” But what we fail to see is that these small acts can block big blessings.
Honesty doesn’t just clean your conscience — it clears your path to destiny.
💡 The Rooster May Be Small, But the Lesson Is Mighty
Whether you are a youth in Egbema, a trader in Warri, or a business owner in Lagos — always remember: Never trade your destiny for temporary gain.
That “small lie” might cancel out years of favor. That “innocent fraud” might delay your breakthroughs.
"Honesty is not just the best policy — it is the only policy that guarantees peace, prosperity, and posterity."
