THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR IN ABUJA

My first night in Abuja after the whole Flight 504 experience was supposed to be peaceful. I checked into my hotel that afternoon, wrote down my flight ordeal, and had my assistant help me finish the story.

By evening, hunger struck hard. I was told the hotel's kitchen wasn’t exactly the best, so I stepped out. Some young guys on the street were kind enough to direct me to a spot called Kutateria—simple, nice, and the food was on point.

I didn’t know anyone in Abuja, so I expected the night to be quiet—maybe even lonely. After eating, I returned to my room, took a shower, and went to bed.

But I didn’t know…

she had followed me.

She said nothing. Made no sound. Just stayed somewhere in the shadows.

I wasn’t expecting anyone, so I didn’t even notice her presence.

Around 5:03 AM, the room got too cold, so I reached out and turned off the air conditioner.

And that was when she came closer…

Softly. Gently. I heard her tiny voice right by my ear:

“How are you doing, Sir?” 😳

I jumped! “Wait, what?! Who’s there?” I turned on the lights.

That was when I saw her.

She’d been watching me all night. Quiet, patient, wicked.

My people, I wish I could say it was a woman. But no—

It was a mosquito.

A pure Abuja breed. 🦟

Elegant. Ruthless. Strategically silent until the AC went off. Then she struck like a trained agent of darkness.

My hands? Full of bites.

My legs? Itchy history.

Sleep? Gone.

Love? Never again. 😭

Moral of the story? In Abuja, close your windows.

And never underestimate a mosquito with a plan.
