WHEN A DEAD MAN SAVED THE LIVING
WHEN A DEAD MAN SAVED THE LIVING
By Egbema Egberi Media special correspondent
Sometime around 2005, I lost a dear friend — a brilliant Master’s degree holder from Ogbudugbudu, a riverine community in the Egbema Kingdom. He passed on in Sapele, and as tradition demanded, we set out to return him home for burial.
Our journey was through the creeks — the route from Adagbarasa to Abadegbene, then Pologbene. We were three speed boats in a sorrowful convoy, carrying the body of our friend and a boatload of emotions.
But after we passed Pologbene, my people, wahala showed face.
One of the speed boats decided it was a Formula 1 race and tried to overtake us mid-river. In the blink of an eye, our own boat went Michael Jackson-style — almost doing a somersault! 😳
Before we could say “Izọn lo!”, almost everyone, including the boat driver, had baptized themselves in the river! 😭
But here's where the mystery starts.
That same boat driver went under with the key to the boat engine, and just like that, the engine went off. You may ask — what’s the big deal? But let me tell you, that was our saving grace! If the engine had kept running with no one controlling it, we’d probably be telling a different story from the spirit world.
To crown it all, there was one pregnant woman on board — the only one who couldn’t swim. By some divine twist, she did not fall into the water! She stayed in the boat like Queen Esther, with only a minor dislocation.
That day, I learned that sometimes, the dead can save the living. And God? He’s still in the business of surprises — even in the middle of a river in Egbema.
Rest on, my friend from Ogbudugbudu. You left with honor — and saved us with grace.
