DELTA STATE FLOOD COMMITTEE ON HIGH ALERT AS NIMET ISSUES FRESH THUNDERSTORM FORECAST

— Oborevwori’s government rolls out proactive measures to protect flood-prone communities

ASABA, DELTA STATE – In proactive response to the recent thunderstorm and heavy rainfall forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the Delta State Government has activated a comprehensive compliance-monitoring operation through its Flood Disaster Management Committee (FDMC) to safeguard lives and property across flood-prone regions of the state.

Speaking on Tuesday during a live interview on ADBN News via DSTV Channel 258, the Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, affirmed that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is leaving nothing to chance.

According to Dr. Oghenesivbe, the Flood Disaster Management Committee, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, has already commenced field monitoring in collaboration with local government authorities across Patani, Burutu, Bomadi, Warri South, Warri South West, Warri North, Ndokwa, Ika and other high-risk LGAs.

BUILDING ON LAST YEAR’S GAINS

Dr. Oghenesivbe commended the committee’s impressive performance during the 2023 flood season and assured Deltans that this year’s intervention will be even more robust and far-reaching.

“Governor Oborevwori has directed the committee to go beyond just monitoring. Relief tents will be built where needed, and temporary study centres will be established in riverine and vulnerable areas to ensure students do not fall behind academically,” the DG revealed.

GOVERNMENT APPEALS TO RESIDENTS

He also used the opportunity to appeal to residents, especially in rural and water-locked communities, to:

  • Clean and maintain proper drainage around their homes
  • Stay away from tall trees during heavy rainfall
  • Harvest all matured crops before floods destroy them
  • Switch off electrical appliances during thunderstorms
  • Secure important documents and property on higher ground

FORWARD-THINKING GOVERNANCE UNDER THE MORE AGENDA

This flood preparedness strategy aligns with the MORE Agenda of Governor Oborevwori’s administration — focused on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security across Delta State.

“Flooding is not just an act of nature, it’s a governance challenge — and this government is confronting it head-on,” Dr. Oghenesivbe concluded.

The state has also pledged continued collaboration with NiMet, NEMA, SEMA, and relevant federal agencies to ensure timely data sharing and rapid emergency response mechanisms as the rainy season intensifies.
