Kwale, Delta State – In what many are describing as a cry against institutional neglect and economic injustice, thousands of furious youths in Kwale, the heart of Ndokwa West Local Government Area, poured onto the streets in a powerful protest against a staggering 20-year-long electricity blackout. The peaceful but impactful protest effectively shut down business, blocked major highways, and drew national attention to a forgotten region that contributes significantly to Nigeria’s energy production—but receives none of its benefits.
⚡ Powerless in the Land That Powers the Nation
Despite hosting the renowned Okpai Power Plant and vast gas reserves that feed into the national grid, communities in Ndokwa land have remained in total darkness for over two decades. The irony is biting—and protesters are no longer silent.
“We generate power for Nigeria, but we live like people in the Stone Age,” one of the enraged protesters told reporters. “We demand our share of the light!”
🛑 Roads Blocked, Kwale on Standstill
Two major protest zones were established:
- Ogume Junction – shutting down the Asaba–Kwale–Ozoro highway.
- Technical College Junction – crippling the Asaba–Ughelli Road.
The demonstrators mounted canopies, chanted slogans, and displayed placards that read:
- “Light Up Ndokwa Nation”
- “No Light, No Peace”
- “Okpai Feeds the Grid, We Feed on Darkness”
These messages resonated across Delta State and beyond, drawing attention to the cruel injustice faced by the region.
🚓 Security on Ground, Protest Remains Peaceful
Security agencies, including heavily armed police and soldiers, were deployed to key locations in Kwale to forestall any breakdown of law and order. As of press time, the demonstration remains peaceful, though tension remains high as residents brace for either intervention—or escalation.
🗣️ Echoes of Marginalisation
The Kwale protest is more than a demand for electricity. It’s a call for dignity, inclusion, and fair treatment. For a region that fuels the economy, their social reality tells a different story: poor roads, zero infrastructure, rising unemployment, and now, 20 years of darkness.
“We feel used and abandoned,” another protester said. “Is this the reward for being a host community?”
📢 Global Egberi Media International Calls for Immediate Action
As a leading voice for justice and equity, Global Egberi Media International joins the people of Ndokwa land in demanding:
- 🔌 Immediate activation of power supply from Okpai Step-Down facility to Kwale and other host communities
- 🛠️ Emergency infrastructural intervention by Delta State and Federal Government
- 🤝 Dialogue between youth leaders and relevant authorities to avoid future unrest
⚠️ A Message to Abuja and Asaba
The people of Ndokwa land are no longer begging. They are demanding. If Nigeria is truly a federation, then its benefits must not be reserved for a few while the rest languish in engineered poverty. A region that gives light deserves to live in light.
