As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, commemorating the nation’s historic transition to civil rule on June 12, there is a solemn call for both celebration and introspection. Speaking on the significance of this day, Prince Agbedeyi Odimientimi Desmond, a Principal Lecturer at Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi Uku, a respected community advocate, and a vocal activist, emphasized the urgent need for a renewed democratic spirit rooted in justice, accountability, and national unity.

“Democracy is not just about casting votes every four years. It is about building institutions, protecting the rights of the people, ensuring transparency, and fostering development. We must stop playing politics with the destiny of over 200 million Nigerians.”

— Prince Agbedeyi O. D

A Call to the Government: Lead with Purpose, Not Power

Prince Agbedeyi expressed deep concern over the continuous economic hardships, insecurity, and widespread disillusionment that plague the Nigerian state. He charged government officials at all levels to see public service as a sacred trust, not a license for looting or oppression.

“The people are tired. They are hungry—not just for food, but for truth, for justice, for peace, and for hope. Nigeria cannot afford leaders who are only interested in their pockets while the masses live in darkness and fear.”

He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to prioritize electoral reforms, anti-corruption measures, and youth empowerment, warning that the legitimacy of democracy is eroded when the will of the people is ignored.

A Message to Politicians: Serve or Step Aside

He did not mince words while addressing politicians directly. According to him, democracy is being undermined by political thuggery, vote-buying, and executive impunity. He called for a new era of patriotic leadership, where elected officials become true servants of the people, not demigods above the law.

“We cannot continue like this. Those who cannot serve selflessly should step aside. Public office is not for show—it is for sacrifice.”

A Message to Nigerians: Your Voice Is Your Power

Turning his attention to everyday Nigerians, Prince Agbedeyi encouraged citizens to remain vigilant, peaceful, and actively engaged in the democratic process.

“Democracy is not a spectator sport. Whether you are a trader, a teacher, a student, or a civil servant—your voice matters. Use it. Register to vote. Hold your leaders accountable. Demand good governance.”

He also reminded Nigerians that unity is more important than tribalism, and love is stronger than hate. “Let us not allow politicians to divide us along ethnic or religious lines,” he added.

Democracy as a Moral Covenant

According to the outspoken lecturer and activist, democracy must return to its moral foundation, echoing the values of honesty, humility, and human dignity. He appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations to rise and speak truth to power.

“We must rebuild Nigeria with both our mouths and our hands. Let us teach our children integrity. Let us walk the path of peace. Let us tell the truth even when it is hard.”

A Nation at the Crossroads

As the country celebrates another Democracy Day, Agbedeyi warns that Nigeria stands at a dangerous crossroads—one path leading to hope and restoration, the other to chaos and collapse.

“History will not forgive us if we get it wrong again. But if we rise in unity, in love, and in justice, the sun of a new Nigeria will shine again.”
