PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY ON DIPHTHERIA AND DENGUE FEVER OUTBREAKS IN EDO STATE

Issued 13 June 2025 • Compiled for publication by Prince Agbedeyi O. D. • Global Egberi Media International

Dear citizens of Edo State,

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, alerts the public to the on‑going diphtheria and dengue fever outbreaks in our state. These diseases pose a serious public‑health threat, and urgent preventive measures are required to protect individuals, families, and communities.

Recognising the Symptoms

Diphtheria

  • Early signs: sore throat, difficulty swallowing, mild fever, general weakness.
  • Advanced signs: thick grey coating in the throat or nose; swollen neck glands; hoarseness or loss of voice; nasal discharge (sometimes bloody); rapid heart rate; severe dehydration; breathing difficulties.

Dengue Fever

  • Mild – moderate: high fever (up to 40 °C), severe headache, pain behind the eyes, intense muscle/joint pain (“break‑bone fever”), nausea, vomiting, skin rash (after a few days), swollen glands.
  • Severe dengue: persistent stomach pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding (gums, nose, urine, stool, or vomitus), bruising, rapid breathing, extreme fatigue or restlessness.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Community

Preventing Diphtheria

  • Ensure routine immunisation with Pentavalent and Td vaccines.
  • Practise good hygiene and avoid close contact with infected persons.
  • Seek early medical attention if any symptoms appear.

Preventing Dengue Fever

  • Eliminate mosquito‑breeding sites: empty or cover all standing‑water containers.
  • Use long‑lasting insecticidal nets and EPA‑approved repellents.
  • Wear long sleeves, trousers, and light‑coloured clothing.
  • Report symptoms promptly to a healthcare facility.

Call for Coordinated Action

The NMA urges the Edo State Government and all stakeholders to:

  • Strengthen routine immunisation against diphtheria.
  • Scale up vector‑control measures to curb mosquito populations.
  • Improve surveillance and case management for early detection and treatment.
  • Provide sufficient resources for healthcare workers and facilities.
  • Engage communities through risk communication and health‑education campaigns.

Our Commitment as the Nigeria Medical Association

The NMA, Edo State Branch, remains steadfast in safeguarding public health. Members are actively:

  • Delivering clinical services for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Conducting public‑health education to raise awareness.
  • Supporting vaccination campaigns to prevent further outbreaks.
  • Collaborating with government agencies for an effective response.

We commend the proactive steps already taken by the Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, National Orthopaedic Hospital, and the Edo State Ministry of Health.

All residents are urged to remain vigilant, take preventive measures, and report suspected cases promptly. Healthcare workers should insist on universal precautions while providing care. Together, we can protect our communities and prevent further loss of life.
