A new socio-political pressure group known as the Edo State Indigenous Alliance Movement (ESIAM) has officially emerged with a strong call for unity, equality, and balanced development among all ethnic nationalities that make up Edo State.

With the inspiring motto, “Unity is Our Strength,” the movement, under the leadership of its Coordinator General, Mr. Aigbe Ebhodaghe Okosun, has vowed to end years of developmental neglect and institutional imbalance affecting several indigenous communities across the state.

The Vision and Objectives of the Movement

In a statement made available to Global Egberi Media International, the group outlined its four major objectives centered on fairness, inclusivity, and recognition.

1️⃣ To ensure equal rights and representation among all ethnic nationalities that constitute Edo State — emphasizing that every group, big or small, deserves a fair share of governance and development.

2️⃣ To draw the attention of the Edo State Government to neglected communities lacking infrastructural development, while constructively engaging the government to deliver on its constitutional responsibilities.

3️⃣ To demand recognition of traditional rulers who have been denied official acknowledgment by the state government, reaffirming that all ethnic groups in Edo are indigenous entities and not settlers.

4️⃣ To advocate for rotational chairmanship of the Edo State Traditional Council among all royal fathers, describing the current arrangement of permanent leadership as “an arrogantly arrogated position” that undermines inclusivity in a multi-ethnic state.

Breaking the Cycle of Political Neglect

According to the Coordinator General, “Every election season, ballot boxes and promises reach our rural communities, but tangible development never does.”

He lamented that successive administrations have concentrated projects within Benin City’s Ring Road and its environs, leaving the rest of the state — particularly rural and riverine communities — in a state of neglect.

“We cannot continue to be remembered only during elections,” Okosun declared. “Development must reach every corner of Edo State. Our roads, schools, hospitals, and other basic amenities deserve the same attention as those within Benin metropolis.”

The movement vowed to change this narrative, stressing that sustainable infrastructural growth and political fairness must extend to all corners of the state.

One Voice, One Edo, Equal Stakeholders

The Edo State Indigenous Alliance Movement reaffirmed that Edo belongs to all its indigenous people, not a single ethnic group.

“Every ethnic nationality in Edo State is an equal stakeholder,” Okosun emphasized. “No ethnicity is more relevant and none is less relevant. Therefore, no group should dominate others or play supremacy politics.”

He further noted that the group’s mission is not divisive, but rather a bridge-building initiative to foster harmony through justice, equity, and balanced representation.

A New Dawn of Indigenous Consciousness

Observers describe the emergence of ESIAM as a timely and necessary awakening, particularly as Edo State prepares for another election cycle. Many view the movement as a legitimate voice of the marginalized, and a platform capable of reshaping the political and developmental narrative of the state.

From the hills of Akoko Edo to the creeks of Egbema, from Esanland to Afemai, the message is the same — Edo must be governed fairly, and every indigenous community must be carried along.

As the movement gains momentum, it symbolizes a new spirit of indigenous awareness — a collective awakening to reclaim dignity, fairness, and equal opportunity for all.
