The peaceful atmosphere of the ongoing Anambra State Governorship Election was shattered in blood and chaos on Saturday as unknown gunmen stormed a voting centre in Owerre Ezukala Ward 1, Orumba South Local Government Area, killing a councillor in broad daylight.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tragic incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., when the councillor—whose identity has not yet been formally released—was reportedly shot at close range while attempting to cast his vote.
What began as a civic exercise of hope quickly descended into horror, as residents, election officials, and security personnel scattered for safety amid gunfire.
⚠️ Election Violence in the Midst of Democracy
Eyewitness Odogwu Odemenna, a community leader in the area, described the scene as “a moment of shock and disbelief.”
“My ward is in flames as we speak. The councillor of my ward was shot dead this afternoon while trying to cast his vote. Security operatives were around when the incident happened, but they couldn’t stop the hoodlums,” Odemenna said in grief.
He further disclosed that the community has been thrown into deep mourning, while tension continues to rise as security operatives comb nearby bushes in pursuit of the assailants.
Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the attack was swift and well-coordinated:
“While voting was ongoing, the gunmen suddenly appeared, shot the councillor, and sped off. It happened in seconds. Everyone ran for cover.”
🚨 Security Concerns Raised Over Electoral Safety
The killing has once again raised disturbing questions about Nigeria’s electoral security architecture and the persistent failure to protect citizens during elections.
Despite heavy security presence reported across Anambra State, the brazen attack exposes the fragility of local intelligence and the challenges of securing polling units in remote communities.
As of press time, the Anambra State Police Command has not officially confirmed the incident. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, was reportedly unavailable for comment as calls and text messages to his phone went unanswered.
🕯️ A Dark Day for Orumba South
The murder of the councillor has left Owerre Ezukala residents grief-stricken. Many described him as a community leader deeply loved for his humility and commitment to grassroots development.
Shocked voters were seen leaving polling centres, abandoning the electoral process in fear. Some community elders lamented the “avoidable breakdown of order” and urged both the state and federal governments to take swift action to restore calm.
“A day like today should have been about democracy and progress, not bloodshed. This shows the need for stronger intelligence and tighter election-day security,” said a local youth leader.
🗳️ Democracy Under Threat
This tragedy underscores the continuing threats facing Nigeria’s democracy, where elections—meant to express the people’s will—too often become grounds for violence and death.
As investigations begin, calls are growing for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and local authorities to review the circumstances leading to the breach and ensure the perpetrators face justice.
📢 Global Egberi Media International joins in mourning the slain councillor and calls for immediate action to ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials, and communities in subsequent elections.
Nigeria’s democracy must not continue to bleed in the name of politics.
