A wave of tension has emerged in Ogbinbiri community, Egbema Kingdom, Delta State, as a group of Ogbinbiri women took to the forest today to protest what they described as unfair boundary encroachment in the ongoing demarcation exercise between Ogbinbiri and Ogbudugbudu communities.
Global Egberi Media International obtained a video from the protest scene, showing women holding placards with various inscriptions while expressing their grievances over farmlands and live crops allegedly destroyed by bulldozers during the demarcation process. The women could be seen chanting solidarity songs and demanding that the ongoing exercise be halted and re-evaluated.
According to some of the protesters, the current boundary line being marked by the neutral, community-led intervention team appears to be encroaching into areas long recognized by both sides as part of Ogbinbiri’s ancestral farmlands. They accused those handling the demarcation of bias and called for a more transparent and all-inclusive process that reflects the historical boundaries known to elders and traditional authorities of both communities.
The women emphasized that their protest was not to promote conflict but to protect their means of livelihood, noting that their crops—cassava, plantain, and yam—represent the primary source of sustenance for their families.
Meanwhile, the independent boundary intervention team, reportedly comprising respected community representatives and mediators, has yet to issue any formal response. It was gathered that the initiative was designed as a neutral peace intervention effort to end decades of tension between Ogbinbiri and Ogbudugbudu, without direct involvement from the Delta State Government.
Neutral Editorial Call for Calm and Inclusiveness
Boundary matters, especially in agrarian communities, require wisdom, restraint, and dialogue. The current situation in Ogbinbiri and Ogbudugbudu underscores the importance of inclusive consultation, where both sides are fully heard and represented before any final boundary adjustment is made.
Global Egberi Media International therefore calls on community leaders, mediators, and traditional institutions involved in the process to ensure transparency and fairness in their work. No boundary peace can endure if it leaves a sense of injustice or exclusion behind.
It is crucial that all parties remain peaceful and cooperative as dialogue continues. The true boundary of coexistence lies not just in the soil beneath our feet, but in the unity and understanding among neighbours.
