Nigeria’s political space was thrown into tension on Tuesday following reports of an alleged armed attack on former presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and several chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, Edo State.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, the incident occurred shortly after the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress.

How the Incident Allegedly Happened

The statement revealed that shortly after the declaration event at the ADC Secretariat, armed individuals allegedly trailed the political leaders to the residence of Chief Odigie-Oyegun. It was there, according to the account, that the attackers opened fire, shooting at the gate and vandalizing several vehicles within the premises.

Photographs circulating online show damaged cars and bullet-riddled gates, suggesting the intensity of the attack. The statement described the incident as a “survived assassination attempt,” raising serious concerns about the safety of political actors and the state of democratic engagement in Nigeria.

“Democracy Is in Danger”

Dr. Tanko’s statement warned that democracy is under threat if political intimidation and violent disruptions are allowed to persist. The alleged attack has since sparked outrage among supporters and political observers, many of whom have called for a thorough investigation and swift action by security agencies.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation regarding arrests or identification of the assailants. However, the gravity of the allegation has intensified national discourse on political tolerance, security, and the protection of democratic rights.

Political Implications

The incident comes at a politically sensitive time as alliances, realignments, and defections begin to shape conversations ahead of future electoral cycles. Analysts warn that such violent episodes, if left unchecked, could heighten political tension and undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.

Stakeholders across party lines are urging calm while demanding accountability and enhanced security measures to safeguard political leaders and citizens alike.
