In a landmark academic engagement set to redefine research collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, Dr. Blessing Emerenini of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), New York, USA, has paid a scholarly visit to the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), with a strong promise of institutional collaboration in the field of mathematical sciences.

This high-profile visit was marked by the June 2025 edition of the Department of Mathematics Seminar Series, held at the Department of Physics Lecture Hall 1, and featured Dr. Emerenini as the resource person. Her presentation attracted a wide range of enthusiastic participants including students, academic staff from various departments of FUTO, and online attendees from beyond the university walls.

🧠 International Collaboration on the Horizon

Dr. Emerenini, an esteemed researcher from RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences, confirmed that discussions are already underway to establish a formal research partnership between RIT and FUTO. According to her, the collaboration will open new frontiers in research, staff exchange, curriculum development, and potentially postgraduate opportunities for FUTO scholars.

“We are excited about the potential of this partnership,” Dr. Emerenini said. “There are mutual benefits for both institutions, and we look forward to working closely with the Department of Mathematics here at FUTO.”

🎓 A Boost for Research, Innovation, and Student Development

The event was coordinated by the Acting Head of Department, Dr. G.A. Okeke, who expressed heartfelt appreciation for the initiative. He emphasized that FUTO students and researchers stand to gain immensely from the global exposure and collaborative outputs this partnership promises to deliver.

“This visit is a historic one for us. Our students and staff will benefit from fresh ideas, access to global research networks, and mentorship opportunities that such a collaboration provides,” Dr. Okeke stated.

He also thanked the Dean of the School of Physical Sciences (SOPS) and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nnenna Oti, whose commitment to advancing research and academic excellence made the visit possible.

“Our VC's passion for research and innovation continues to inspire us. We deeply appreciate her unwavering support,” he added.

🧑‍🎓 Multi-Departmental Participation and Online Engagement

The seminar was well-attended by scholars across various departments of FUTO, highlighting the interdisciplinary interest in the topics discussed. In addition, remote participants joined virtually, signaling FUTO’s growing embrace of hybrid learning and knowledge-sharing platforms.

Photos and testimonials from the event reflect an atmosphere of learning, excitement, and intellectual exchange — a key indication that FUTO is quickly positioning itself as a hub for international academic engagement.

📢 A New Dawn for Mathematics at FUTO

With the groundwork now being laid for an international academic bridge between FUTO and RIT, New York, the Department of Mathematics is stepping confidently into a new era of global relevance and research excellence.

This visit, beyond its symbolic significance, is expected to yield tangible benefits in research funding, co-authored publications, advanced training, and collaborative projects that can address real-world problems using mathematical models and innovations.

Special thanks to all participants, facilitators, and guests who made this seminar a resounding success. May God bless you all.
