BREAKING: Kidnapped Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku Students Regain Freedom

Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State – Relief and joy have returned to the families and friends of two students of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, who were abducted from a private residence in the Azagba. According to a family source who spoke exclusively to Global Egberi Media, the two kidnapped students have now regained their freedom.

The students, whose names are being withheld for security reasons, were reportedly kidnapped several days ago from their off-campus lodge at Azagba, a semi-urban residential area. Their abduction sparked widespread concern among students, staff, and residents of Ogwashi-Uku, with many calling for urgent security intervention.

While the exact circumstances surrounding their release remain unclear at the time of filing this report, a close family source confirmed on Thursday evening that the young victims have returned safely and are currently being monitored by relatives.

“Yes, they have been released. We are thankful to God. The trauma is much, but we are glad they are alive. We are not in a position to confirm how they were freed,” the source told Global Egberi Media under condition of anonymity.

Although official details about whether a ransom was paid or if the students were rescued by security forces remain sketchy, the family source disclosed that the kidnappers had earlier reduced their initial ransom demand. The captors, who allegedly demanded a staggering N300 million at the beginning, were said to have lowered their demand to N30 million before negotiations took a different turn.

Authorities Yet to Comment

As of press time, there has been no formal statement from the Delta State Police Command, the institution's management, or the local government authorities regarding the incident or the release of the victims. Efforts to reach the police spokesperson proved unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, community stakeholders in Azagba and Ogwashi-Uku have once again called on security agencies to beef up patrol and surveillance around student hostels and rural settlements to prevent further attacks and reassure the public of their safety.

Background

This latest case adds to the growing list of abduction incidents targeting students and youth in Southern Nigeria, a trend that has caused fear and unrest in many academic environments. While the Delta State Government has invested in security infrastructure and crime prevention, observers say more proactive community policing and intelligence-led operations are needed to deter criminals.

As the situation develops, Global Egberi Media will continue to monitor updates and provide verified information as soon as it becomes available.
