In a renewed demonstration of commitment to people-oriented governance, the Delta State Government under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has embarked on an aggressive infrastructure push—one that connects neglected rural communities and enhances the state capital’s urban fabric.

The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, led a high-level inspection tour across key project sites, applauding the governor’s steadfast dedication to fulfilling campaign promises and delivering durable infrastructure.

🏙️ Urban Renewal in Asaba: A Modern Network Comes Alive

A centerpiece of the inspection was the unveiling of a 2.75 km newly completed road network in Asaba, the Delta State capital. The network features an integrated drainage system tied to the city’s stormwater channels—ensuring long-term durability and flood resilience.

Comrade Izeze noted that the area, previously in a deplorable condition, now boasts interconnected, fully paved roads that have transformed the living experience for residents.

“Before now, this place was practically uninhabitable like the third world before independence. But as you can see today, the roads are smooth, well-drained, and motorable,” Izeze remarked.

📌 Streets Completed Under the Urban Upgrade Include:

  • Onuorah Ifesinachi Street
  • Aaron Ndubusi Street
  • Chinedu Obodo Way
  • Senator Francis Nwajel Street
  • Jude Ugheni Street
  • Rock Valley Boulevard
  • Abigail Orugbo Street
  • Oke Oshogbor Street
  • Chinedu Obodo Extension
  • Alika Blessing Street (off Talita School Road)
  • Kwakagbor Community Road and drainage within GSM Company, Asaba

These roads are part of eight interlinked routes under the urban renewal initiative of the Oborevwori administration. Izeze emphasized that his ministry ensured strict supervision to guarantee that contractors complied with technical specifications.

“We are satisfied with the quality of work. The roads are ready for inauguration by His Excellency, Governor Oborevwori, either physically or virtually,” he noted.

🌾 Rural Roads: Bridging Developmental Gaps

The inspection continued to Oko-Amakom in Oshimili South Local Government Area, where a strategic rural road connecting Oko-Amakom to Oko-Obiokpu, along with the 2nd Niger Bridge Service Road, is currently under construction. The project has reached an impressive 64.82% completion rate.

During the visit, Izeze emphasized the project’s economic importance, particularly for agrarian communities who rely on this route to transport rice and other crops to commercial hubs like Onitsha.

“This road has been long overdue—it predates the creation of Delta State. But under Governor Oborevwori, it is finally being realized. That’s why many people call him the ‘Promise Keeper,’” he said.

🛠️ Accountability and Standards Enforcement

At the Kwakagbor Community Road and drainage site, Izeze identified anomalies and directed engineers to immediately compel contractors to make necessary corrections.

“We will return unannounced to confirm that the corrections have been implemented,” he warned.

Contractors have been instructed to align their execution with global best practices, including guidelines from the United Nations and local technical benchmarks from the Ministry of Works.

🤝 Contractors Commit to Timely Delivery

Mr. Jay Jay, South-South Area Manager of Setraco Nigeria Limited, the construction firm handling the Oko-Amakom/Oko-Obiokpu road, assured the Commissioner and the people of Delta State that the project would be completed within five weeks.

🛤️ Oborevwori’s Vision for Inclusive Development

According to Comrade Izeze, the Oborevwori-led administration is focused on building inclusive infrastructure that connects rural communities to economic opportunities, reduces travel time, improves standard of living, and drives statewide development.

“These projects are not just about roads; they are about dignity, mobility, economic empowerment, and service delivery to Deltans who have waited far too long,” he concluded.
