BREAKING NEWS: Tasmanian Pilot and Passenger Missing Over Bass Strait

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: SEARCH UNDERWAY AS TASMANIAN PILOT AND PASSENGER VANISH OVER BASS STRAIT

By GlobalEgberiMedia – Sunday, August 3, 2025

A major search and rescue operation is underway in southern Australia after a light aircraft carrying two Tasmanian residents mysteriously disappeared over the Bass Strait on Saturday afternoon, August 2, 2025.

According to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the missing aircraft is a bright-green two-seat plane that departed from George Town, Tasmania, at approximately 12:45 p.m. local time. Onboard were a highly experienced pilot in his 70s and his partner, a woman in her 60s.

The pair were flying to Hillston Airport in Condobolin, New South Wales, with a planned stopover in Leongatha, Victoria. Tragically, the aircraft never reached its destination, failed to make radio contact, and did not issue any distress signal before vanishing from radar.

Authorities Respond Swiftly

Concerns were first raised around 5 p.m. on Saturday when the plane failed to land as scheduled. Family members alerted authorities, prompting a full-scale air and sea search involving aircraft, helicopters, and marine vessels from Tasmania and Victoria.

Tasmania Police Inspector Nick Clark confirmed that the pilot was well-versed in flying but had only recently purchased the aircraft about three to four months ago. He had reportedly undertaken several flights with it prior to this incident.

"Any body of water is difficult to search. Our main focus is to find these people alive," Inspector Clark stated, acknowledging the challenges posed by the Bass Strait’s vast and unpredictable waters.

Public Urged to Be Vigilant

Authorities are calling on locals in southern Victoria and Tasmania to watch for any possible debris—such as life jackets, floating wreckage, or airplane parts—that could help locate the missing duo.

"If you find anyone in the water and it’s safe to do so, please render assistance immediately," Inspector Clark urged.

The Spirit of Tasmania ferry, which operates daily between Tasmania and mainland Australia, was diverted to the last known coordinates of the aircraft on Saturday night. Unfortunately, search crews reported no sightings.

Similar Incident in Africa

This tragedy comes weeks after a similar aviation mystery in Africa. On June 24, 2025, a four-seater plane flying from Nigeria to Gabon via Cameroon disappeared mid-journey. The aircraft, piloted by an American, had departed Kano, Nigeria, at 6 p.m. and was scheduled to land in Libreville, Gabon, at 11 p.m. after a stopover in Douala, Cameroon—but it never arrived.

These back-to-back incidents have reignited global concerns about small aircraft safety, particularly over water and in regions with unpredictable weather patterns.

Ongoing Search

As of Sunday evening, August 3, 2025, the AMSA and Tasmania Police were reassessing the search strategy, with rescue teams working tirelessly. While hope remains high, experts acknowledge that every passing hour makes the mission more challenging.
