Niger Delta in Crisis: Political Analyst Decries Poverty Amid Oil Wealth
By GlobalEgberiMedia
Sunday, August 3, 2025 — The oil-rich Niger Delta region, often referred to as the economic backbone of Nigeria, remains mired in abject poverty, infrastructural decay, and social neglect despite its vast contributions to the nation’s wealth. This was the resounding message from Comrade Ofoyeju Douboerimini James, a political analyst and crusader for a better Niger Delta, in a passionate write-up that has stirred intense public debate.
“A Region in Darkness and Decay”
James, who claims to have toured all nine states of the Niger Delta — including Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, and Imo — expressed dismay that there is “nothing to show” for the billions in oil derivation funds received from the Federation Account over the years. He lamented the absence of quality roads, hospitals, potable water, and functional schools, describing the region as “people living in hell” despite its natural endowments.
“From Benin City down to Delta State and beyond, the roads are deplorable. Anyone who has traveled this path knows the suffering. How can we claim to be an oil-producing region when our infrastructure is in ruins?” James questioned.
Environmental and Economic Hardship
The activist decried the environmental devastation caused by oil spills, which have wiped out fishing livelihoods for many families. “Our parents who are fishermen can no longer fish because the rivers are poisoned and the fishes gone extinct,” he said, noting that the region also battles malaria outbreaks due to stagnant water and poor sanitation.
He highlighted that the capital of Bayelsa State has endured almost a year without electricity, a situation he described as “total darkness” in a region capable of powering itself many times over.
Leadership Failure and Youth Complacency
James accused Niger Delta leaders of abandoning their people, choosing instead to reside in Abuja while the region suffers. He condemned some youth representatives for allegedly shielding corrupt leaders from criticism in exchange for “crumbs and peanuts.”
“When will the unnecessary praise-singing stop? Our leaders must be held accountable. Instead, some youths defend the very people draining our wealth,” he remarked, calling such behavior a betrayal of the region’s struggle.
Call for Resource Control and Accountability
The political analyst reiterated the need for renewed agitation for resource control and self-actualization, but cautioned that this would only succeed if traditional institutions refused to bow to “demigods” who exercise unchecked authority.
“The struggle for Niger Delta liberation is still achievable, but only if we unite and reject the madness and foolishness that has plagued our political and traditional leadership. Our common wealth must be used for the people, not a select few,” James declared.
His piece has reignited discussions on the systemic neglect of the Niger Delta and the urgent need for transparent governance, sustainable development, and environmental restoration in the region.
